I was walking back from Ubud to my villa this afternoon and just ahead of me was a small bird. It didn’t have its flight feathers, and it looked like its tiny right wing was broken. It was terrified and running quickly, chirping in great distress.
I was wondering if its mother was looking for it and felt sorry as there was nothing I could do. Before I knew it, the little bird had turned right and ran in front of me, straight out on to the road. In a split second it was under the tyre of the next car with a sickening sound as it’s poor little body was squashed. Just like that it was gone. A life extinguished.
Apart from the fact that this was a very upsetting thing to see and hear, it really got me thinking. That could be us, at any moment. In fact only two hours before I was just centimetres from being taken out by a speeding motorbike, and the result would not have been pretty due to the speed he was going.
We’ve all heard the cliche that life is short. But how often to we stop to consider just how short it is? I cannot believe I’m 50. Surely I just got out of school? I still feel 18 in my head and heart. It feels to me that it was just moments ago I gave birth to my beautiful boys, now grown men at 30 and 25. It feels like a millisecond has passed since my grandchildren were born, now almost 5 and 2.5.
Time is running and fast. It feels faster than ever this past few years and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.
One of the myriad of reasons for leaving the corporate world was that I didn’t want to work just to pay bills and die. I want to live. I want to embrace life and squeeze every last delicious juicy drop out of it. I’m doing pretty well with that and I’m happy with the choices I’ve made. However life still seems to be flying by too quickly and hasn’t this half year gone in just a nanosecond?
I want to encourage you to take a moment and ask yourself, are you doing what you really want to do with this one precious life you have? If not, what are you doing to change it?
If you don’t love your job – find one you do.
If you want to learn – go back to school.
If you aren’t happy in your relationship, and it’s beyond repair – leave. It won’t be easy, but I can promise you it will be worth it, trust me on this one, I know.
If you aren’t healthy – do what you can to change that. Today.
If you want to travel – go NOW, don’t wait!
If your mortgage is killing you – sell and downsize.
If you’ve always wanted to volunteer overseas – get on it!
If you have friends that you don’t fit with any more – stop trying to force it, let it go and make way for new ones that will appear.
If you don’t have a hobby that you love – find one.
If you want to be an artist – paint, draw, write, sculpt, sing, dance, whatever – just do it!
If you want to have a crazy hairstyle – find the wildest one you like and book it in. The worst that will happen is that you won’t like it, but it will grow back.
If you’ve always wanted a tattoo but think you’re too old – just go and get one.
If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, as long as it’s legal and nobody gets hurt – please stop waiting.
Life is now, it’s your time to grab it and run like the wind. It’s NEVER too late!
Take risks. Love fiercely. Regret nothing.
